The year 2000 is characterised by the significant expansion of hotel capacity, the improvement of the occupancy rate and the growth of the number of guests and nights spent in the hotels, which exceeds the rate of growth of the previous years. The foreign exchange revenue reached an unprecedented high value.
The number of commercial accommodation units increased by almost 8% by the end of 2000, as compared to the previous year. The number of hotels grew by thirty units. The number of five-star and spa hotels grew at the highest rate (+ 57%), but the four-star hotel capacity grew significantly, too (26%). Budapest saw the opening of a five-star hotel,
two five-star apartment hotels and 6 four-star hotels last year, part of which is due to the reconstruction or conversion of former dilapidated hotels. This accounts for a 50% and 30% increase in the number of five and four-star hotels respectively. The expansion of capacity will continue in the upcoming years, particularly in Budapest.
The figures of last year indicate that the demand keeps pace with this increase of capacity: the occupancy rate of hotel rooms grew from 45.5% of 1999 to 47.1%. At national level, it were primarily the high-class hotels, especially the Budapest ones, that produced impressive results.
